Required

  • English 12 with a grade of "C" or higher, or equivalent (documentation may be required, see Application for Admission.

    Acceptable alternatives to English 12 include First Peoples' English 12 or VIU's ENGL 067 Students who do not have these requirements may write the Language Proficiency Index (LPI). A Level IV or better on the essay part, plus a min. average of 50 percent on the additional sections of the LPI is considered by VIU to be equivalent to English 12 with a grade of "C+".

  • Successful completion (80% pass) of Computer Basics test, OR Completion of Vancouver Island University introductory computer course within the past two years, or equivalent skills. See Required Computer Skills.

  2. You can pay your application fee online or by phone (1-877-888-8890 toll free) or 604-485-2878 (Powell River, BC) or by mailing cheque to:

  3. Once we have reviewed your completed Application for Admission and you have been accepted into the program, we will email you an official acceptance letter with instructions on getting started in the program.

Required Computer Skills

If you're not sure that you have the necessary computer skills to participate in these classes, we recommend that you complete a self-assessment quiz that will help you make that determination.

In order to fulfill the computer skills requirement, you must either provide details of computer courses completed (or equivalent experience) on your application for admission, or complete a Computer Basics test (available online). Please contact us (1-877-888-8890 toll free North America) for more information.

The majority of the Technical Communication courses have been structured to use free, downloadable trial versions of the software studied. Electives Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop do have specific software requirements. The Technical Writing Tools course also requires access to a PC with MS Office 2003 or higher. You also need to be aware of the computer and system requirements outlined under Technical Requirements.
