This online course offers a practical introduction to designing documents of all kinds. Students learn how best to present different types of information. They learn to analyze the information and to lay out pages for a printed or online document.

Good documents invite people back – no matter what the use. Whether it is a newsletter, brochure, training manual, project proposal, advertisement or a novel, good layout is important and plays a huge part in the final look of, enjoyment of, and usability of a document.

Learn about page anchors such as headers/footers, table of contents, appendices, glossaries, overviews, summaries, and lesson plans. Discover how to select and integrate text and graphics such as photos, charts and tables, clip art, and international symbols and icons. Learn to use styles and style sheets to help maintain consistency and find out how colour and typography affect readability and ones’ perception of the overall documentl.

Instructor Bio

Carol Ramsay is a dynamic instructor with a diverse background in a number of areas. She has a degree from BCIT in Human Resource Management, and also a degree in Social Welfare. In her years of developing her desktop publishing skills, she has learned all the tricks and techniques of designing documents the hard way, and is now happy to pass along the knowledge she's acquired.
