A wide variety of courses are available at the Powell River campus. Every program has a practice component, where theory moves into application as students learn to work effectively in their chosen career.

Graduates are well positioned to make meaningful contributions to society through their practice with individuals, families, groups and communities, and have strong success with employment upon completion of their programs. Active and participatory learning are what one can expect, as well as relevant and current curriculum. Learners are guided through experiences that require self-awareness, commitment, reflection, critical thinking, and teamwork. Through these varied and rich learning experience, students will gain the competencies necessary to enter their chosen health or human services career.

The Early Childhood Education and Care program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with young children and their families in child care settings.

Health Care Assistant

This program is offered annually at the Powell River campus and is designed to provide the student with theory and skills required to become a caregiver. The major focus is in providing care for people experiencing changes in their functional abilities.

NEW!Introduction to School and Community Support Worker

Program Information

Introduction to School and Community Support Worker (SCSW) is a new dual‐credit program for Grade 12 students. It is delivered in the first and second semester of the Grade 12 school term. Students will attend half time at Brooks and half time at the Powell River Campus of VIU. Grade 12 students have the opportunity to complete grade 12 English, take 4 of the 10 SCSW specialty courses, and complete ENG115, which is first year university level English. Upon successful completion of the dual credit program, ENGL115 and the specialty course are transferable to the School and Community Support
Worker Certificate (SCSW) which is the first year of a Diploma in Disability Studies (DIDS), and a Bachelor in Community Rehabilitation.
